Charles Holland

Charles Holland, Board President for the Center for Better Aging, is President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Bernard Hospital, an independent Catholic safety-net community hospital serving the Englewood community and Chicago’s South Side. Mr. Holland joined the hospital in 1998, assuming his current leadership position in 2013, and serves on the hospital’s Board of Trustees.
Mr. Holland has been instrumental in advancing the stature of the hospital as a community leader. He led the work on the hospital’s Community Development program for affordable housing, its Pediatric Mobile Health Unit and its Dental Center. His focus is on programs to keep people well, prevent disease, ensure safety for St. Bernard patients, and advance health equity in South Side Chicago communities. In 2016, the hospital opened a state-of-the-art Ambulatory Care Center to extend its comprehensive services to outpatient treatment. Under Mr. Holland leadership, the hospital has improved its Leapfrog Hospital Patient Safety rating to two consecutive “A” grades.
In 2023, the nonprofit organization Costs of Care presented Mr. Holland with the Steven Schroeder Award for Outstanding Healthcare CEO. The honor recognizes a hospital and/or health system CEO who has demonstrated courageous and ethical leadership addressing the twin issues of affordability and quality of health care in their community.
Mr. Holland is also a board member of the South Side Healthy Community Organization transformation project, a 13-member collaborative focused on better patient access to care, effective care coordination among providers and recruitment of needed clinicians.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Akron, and a Master of Arts degree in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago and in Health Law from Loyola University, Chicago.
